Vital Statistics from Galena Newspapers
July 22, 1828 - November 19, 1850
Marriages, Petitions for Divorce
Deaths, Estate Notices, and Sexton Reports

The following are from Robert Hanson's papers. He published two volumes of vital statistics: Volume 1 included 1828-1840, and Volume 2 included 1840-1846. The abstracts from 1846 to the end of 1850 were never published. The date following each abstracted entry is the date of the newspaper.
He published the Sexton Reports that are included here as part of the Old Cemetery Volume. In his introduction to the cemetery he thought the Sexton Records would replace many of the tombstones that are missing. Including the reports as part of the newspaper abstracts is more suited to the Jo Daviess website format.
We will never know what criteria the newspaper editor used to determine what vital record to include. The following range all over the upper Midwest as far north as Minnesota and south to St. Louis and Kentucky. The neighboring counties to Jo Daviess County have many entries. But information about people who resided in Jo Daviess County may not included. This in part was solved in later years with paid correspondents from all these communities.

East and West Galena Townships
(This section is taken from the book "History of Jo Daviess County  1904)
The Townships of East and West Galena are situated, geographically, that a short sketch of the one necessarily is a short sketch of the them, because the city of Galena is formed out of portions of each township. There is no question that the mines near the city of Galena were the cause of the earliest settlement of the county, and for years Galena was practically isolated from the remainder of the State, the nearest settlement in the east being Chicago and the nearest inhabited point on the south being Peoria.
The first plat of Galena, which appears of record in the Recorder's office of Jo Daviess County, was made by Charles R. Bennet, and is to be found in "Book F," page 65, of the Records of Jo Daviess County.
He had person sources.4 He witnessed the taxed of William Bennett in 1839 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. https://jodaviess.illinoisgenweb.org/tax/1839PP.htm
1839 Personal Property Assessment
of Jo Daviess County, Illinois

In 1839 the Federal Government owned all the lands in Jo Daviess County except for the town lots of Galena that were sold in 1837. The only monies that were available to County Government came from the personal property taxes, the Galena town lot taxes, and license fees. This had to suffice to build a court house, a jail, and to pay salaries.
It would be another eight years before those living outside of Galena could purchase their lands. These people were gambling that they could eventually own their lands. They hoped for preemption rights, which were eventually denied.
