The predecessor of the Church was the Easton Religious Society whose
constitution was dated August 12, 1798. The group began meeting in a
school known as the Union Academy, then on Ferner (now Second) Street in
Easton, PA. The English teacher at the time, Andrew Mein, had obtained
permission from the trustees of the Academy for the group to meet on the
Academy premises. The record of the trustees meeting shows that the
permission was granted on July 21, 1798. Records of those early days are
lost, and the official records of the church begin in 1811 when a group
of people petitioned the Presbytery of New Brunswick, NJ for a "teacher
of the Word in the English Language.
