One of Springfield’s early settlers, Jacob Fackler, born in Ohio in 1825, came with his parents to Iowa in 1836. On April 17, 1858, he started to drive to Sarpy County, arriving on May 8th. From the national government, he purchased 120 acres at $1.25 an acre. The next year he bought another 120, but in 1865, he sold these farms to purchase a new 120, not far from the Platte River, and soon added another 120 acres. In 1876, he replaced the old log home with “an elegant stone house”. It you look for it, you can find it, now occupied by the Robert Keyes, Jr. family. He made cattle raising his chief pursuit, and became successful.

Obituary, Date & Newspaper Unknown, Jacob Fackler - (top has been torn away)...results of a paralytic stroke. He had been around town Monday, giving his attention to some business matters and though quite feeble he appeared in normal health. He was stricken late in the evening & his death ensued a few hours later. The death of this old & well known resident of Springfield was a shock to our citizens. Mr. Fackler was one of the best known men of the community, having lived here fifty years or more. For many years he conducted a hardware store in Springfield, his sons George & Dave, being associated with him at different periods of his business career here. The store building now occupied by the Starry restaurant was built by Mr. Fackler & occupied by him during all the years he was in business, & was one of the landmarks in Springfield up to a few years ago. For some time Mr. Fackler has not engaged in any active business pursuits, but was a familiar figure around the streets, where he loved to meet & converse with his friends. He had a rich fund of anecodte [sic] & experience of the early days of Nebraska's settlement, having endured the hardships & privations that fall to the lot of all pioneers in a new country, & was an interesting conversationalist. Mr. Fackler was a true friend, a kind neighbor, an honest man & a good citizen. In Springfield's early days he extended credit & financial assistance to many when it was not to be had elsewhere. He will be missed in the community, not only by his older friends but by a host of others as well. Jacob Fackler was born near Dayton, Ohio, July 15, 1825, & went with his parents to Indiana at the age of eight years, moving to Iowa in 1836. He was married to Miss Minerva Elizabeth Nichelson [sic] Aug 24, 1854. Leaving their Iowa home April 17, 1858, Mr. & Mrs. Fackler moved to Nebraska, becoming residents of this state & county May 8, 1858. About 1864 he bought the farm south east of Springfield which has always been the family home, occupied by either Mr. Fackler or his sons, & owned it continuously from that time until a few weeks ago when he entered into a contract for its sale. Mr. Fackler is survived by his wife & eight children. They are: James A Fackler, of Idaho Falls, Idaho; J. B. Fackler, of Raymond, Kansas, George R Fackler, of Springfield, David M Fackler, of Wayside, Neb.; Mrs. Mary Ringo & Mrs. George Burchett of St. Francis, Kansas; Mrs. B. F. Dill, of South Bend, Neb. & Mrs. A. C. Heacock, of this county. Several children including the eldest daughter, Mrs. Fred Marsh, are dead. He also leaves a sister & brother, Mrs. Sarah Startzer & Samuel Fackler, both residing at Ely, Iowa. Mr. Fackler's twin brother died...(remainder cut off)
