    Bertha Bartels
Oregonian, The (Portland, OR) - Sunday, December 6, 2009
Bartels, Bertha 'Bunny' 77 2/25/1932 12/1/2009 Early evening, Dec. 1, 2009, our beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed from our hands. Survivors include her children, Barbara Scornaienchi Tracy of California and Dan Bartels and Dave Bartels of Portland; and grandsons, Ryan and Kyle Scornaienchi of Tracy, Calif. On Feb. 25, 1932, Bertha Walton Bartels was born in Oregon. She was raised and educated by her grandparents who were lifetime residents of Coburg. Bunny attended Oregon College of Education in Monmouth, where she received her degree in education in 1952. Bunny was a longtime resident of Gresham where she raised her family and impacted the community with her work in the education sector. She introduced and implemented year-round education. Bunny's career spanned over four decades when she was an educator, school board chairman and business owner. For the past 10 years she enjoyed her work with Passage International Travel. After serving the needs of others, on most days, one could find Bunny in her kitchen baking or outside gardening. She participated in Cycle Oregon; was an avid golfer, tennis player and a member of "The Hotliners" hiking group for the past 30 years. Bunny surrounded herself with wonderful people-those who became her life long friends and friendships extending across the globe. In her 77 years of life, the more Bunny lived, learned and studied, the humbler she was. She believed in life and embraced it with a gentle touch. She always was reminded of where she came from and on whose shoulders she stood. She always paid attention to things of the heart and was known by things that we love and she will be remembered for her deep sense of integrity and her work for those less fortunate. It was Bunny's dream that women who face incredible daily challenges (of poverty and lack of opportunities) are empowered by love and given hope for a brighter future. She was very passionate about helping women with their challenges of life; she believed when one takes care of a woman one takes care of the whole family. Bunny has been serving and making a difference all her life. Her work includes two Katrina missions; local work at the Oregon Food Bank; Meals-On-Wheels; St. Francis Soup Kitchen; and Bunny's international work in Africa included the Esther Home for girls in Rwanda, the Kageyo Refugee Camp and her sustainable project supporting a special Rwandan woman and her family. Bunny was a woman of spirit and courage, she had this inner light and strength that seemed to fill the room with hope; it made one want to savor it and not let it go. Bunny lives on, etched in our memories and stored in the forgotten corners of our lives. Her passing causes us profound sadness, but her life is cause for great celebration. A celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, in the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 9800 S.E. 92nd Ave., Portland. A reception will follow. The family has requested that memorial donations be sent to Providence Home Services & Hospice.Oregonian, The (Portland, OR) - Sunday, December 6, 2009
