Elijah Nicholson Dies at Omaha

Elijah Benton Nicholson died Monday in Omaha. Word was received by his brothers Henry & Tom here Saturday that his condition had turned critical. He had been ailing for a month and the severe heat of the past few days was more that he could survive.

Funeral services were held from the Brewer-Korisko Funeral home at 10 oc’lock [sic] Wednesday moning. [sic] Interment was in Graceland Park cemetery. Rev. W. D. Stambaugh of Richfield officiated.

Leslie McCamley was soloist. He sang “Rock of Ages” and “Abide With Me.”

Brothers, sons and nephews of the deceased acted as pallbearers, Tom, Henry and George Nicholson brothers; Ray, Floyd and Dale Nicholson, son and nephews.

The deceased was born in what is now Plattford precinct in Sarpy county, on April 23, 1861, and passed away Monday at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 27 days.

He was united in marriage to Eva L. Briscoe, who also lived in this community, on January 23, 1889. The wedding was performed at Papillion. To this union six children were born of whom five, with the wife survive.

They are Bert, of International Falls, Minn., Floyd of Hastings, Miss Ruth of Lincoln, Mrs. Lee Kendall and Mrs. Joseph Galaska of Omaha, and by one sister, Mrs. Alvin Ball of Corvallis, Ore., three brothers, Henry and Tom of Springfield; George of Papillion; and 11 grandchildren and other relatives.

Being the oldest son of a sturdy pioneer family he suffered the hardships and trials incident to the life of the early settlers. His early life was spent in Sarpy county where he was engaged in farming and railroad construction work until 1912 when he moved to Douglas county where he resided until the time of his death.

He helped build the Missouri Pacific through Springfield in 1881. He assisted in the removal of several building from old Sarpy Centre to the present site of Springfield. He helped build the Rock Island through Sarpy county in 1891 and did extensive work on the Burlington and Union Pacific.

“Lige” as he was familiarly known visited in Springfield for several weeks a couple years ago.
