JOHN RILEY NICHOLSON, JR., farmer, Section 31, Town 13, Range 12, P. O. Springfield, was born in Washington County, Ind., December 15, 1834, where he lived until thirteen years of age, when his parents moved to Des Moines County, Iowa. In 1852, moved to Rock Island County, Ill., where he lived two years, attending school and working on the farm. In 1854, moved to Johnson County , Iowa, where they lived until 1858, when they moved to Sarpy County, Neb., arriving there May 3, first settling on Section 2, Town 11, Range 12, and moved on their present farm in May, 1865, which he took by pre-emption. He is the eldest son of Dr. Green Benton Nicholson, who was a grandson of Gen. Greene, of Revolutionary fame. Dr. Nicholson was born in Nicholasville, Ky., July 29, 1813, dying February 26, 1877, aged a little over sixty-three years. The mother of Mr. N., Mrs. Angeline McClure Nicholson, died in 1843. John R. was married in Johnson County, Iowa, May 26, 1860, to Miss Zerelda Stewart, who was born in Salem, Ind., April 27, 1842. They have five children--Elijah B., born April 23, 1861; James Beck, March 12, 1864; David Henry, January 14, 1866; Emma Jane, February 18, 1868; John Riley, Jr., November 26, 1876.

After an illness of one short week J. R. Nicholson passed away at 6:30 a.m. February 29. The previous Saturday he was in Springfield and while never a man of robust health he looked good for may years yet. That night, however, he was attacked with pleurisy, which later developed into pneumonia and caused his death. The funeral was held from his late residence Monday at 1:30 with burial in Elk Hill cemetery. The deceased was an honorary member of the Masonic lodge of Springfield, which order conducted the funeral services, assisted by members of Papillion lodge. Rev. Toms conducted the religious service at the house. John Riley Nicholson was born in Washington county, Indiana, December 15, 1834. At the age of fourteen his father's family moved to Iowa, where they lived until 1858. In the winter of 1857 he united with the M. E. church at Solon, Iowa, and maintained his religious belief until the end of this life. April, 1857, he moved to the then Territory of Nebraska and located on what is now part of the Cornish ranch and Stratman farm southwest of Springfield. In the month of April 1860, he returned to Iowa, and May 26th of that year was married to Miss Zerelda J. Stewart. They immediately came to Nebraska, locating on a farm on and on-half miles south of Springfield where they made their home until 1864. At that time Mrs. Nicholson moved to his homestead two and one-half miles southeast of this place and resided there the remainder of his life. Mrs. Nicholson died about four years ago. Their family consisted of twelve children, four girls and eight boys, seven of who are living. They are: Mrs. Emma Ball of Louisville, E. B., J. B., and D. H. Nicholson of Springfield, J. B. Nicholson, jr., [sic] of Omaha, and T. W. and G. F. Nicholson who make their home on the old homestead.
