Biography

Lewis R. Harris was born on 22 November 1787 in Fayette County, Kentucky. Guessing at Fayette county, since Jessamine was not inexistence.1 He and Nancy Davis were married on 31 January 1808 in Jessamine County, Kentucky.2,3,4,5,6,7,8 He witnessed the marriage of Elijah Nicholson and Mary Davis on 11 July 1810 in Nicholasville, Jessamine County, Kentucky.9,7,10,3,4,11,12,13 Lewis R. Harris died on 30 November 1817 at age 30 in Possibly Vincennes, Indiana.14,14 He died on 30 November 1817 at age 30 in Clark County, Indiana. He died on 30 November 1817 at age 30 in Madison County, Kentucky.3
Lewis R. Harris was also known as Lewis Robert Harris. He was also known as Lewis Rice Harris. Research Note:. There is no one document that provides proof that Lewis Harris is the son of William Harris and Jane Overstreet.

If he is their son, the question may arise as to why William Harris did not leave any of his estate to Nancy Davis Harris, the widow of Lewis Harris? There are two possible reasons --
1 - she had remarried to William Patrick and was quite comfortably settled
2 - her children by Lewis Harris were all over the age of 21 at the time of William Harris' death.

The question may also be why it is supposed that Lewis Harris is their son. Several circumstantial events point to this being so:
1 - In 1810 he is a bondsman to the marriage of James Harris (s/o William Harris). It is likely they are related.
He appeared in the census in 1810 in Jessamine County, Kentucky.15 He was taxed in 1813 in Jessamine County, Kentucky. All men over 21 were required to pay the poll tax in Kentucky. This puts most adult men in the tax records even if they owned no property. Women who were widowed and owned property and underage men who owned property were also listed by name in the tax lists.16 He was a grantee of on 20 December 1816 of in Charlestown, Clark County, Indiana. Lot #12117 He was a grantee of on 20 December 1816 of in Charlestown, Clark County, Indiana. Lot #103. In 1800 the Northwest Territory was divided and Clark's Grant became a part of the Indiana Territory. When Indiana's Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison determined to bring slavery into the Territory, an historic meeting of opposition was held in Springville. Established in 1798, Springville was the immediate predecessor of Charlestown, which was surveyed and platted on a ninety acre plot of ground comprised of 149 lots in 1808. The city was named for one of the surveyors, Mr. Charles Beggs.17 He sold to on on 9 February 1817 of in Charlestown, Clark County, Indiana. Does not appear to be the signature handwritten by Lewis Harris, but attested to and written by the County Recorder, J. Shelby.17 He sold to on after 30 November 1817 of in Clark County, Indiana. (heirs) sold lot #103 to Geo Ross May 5 183117,18,17 He had his estate probated between 6 April 1819 and 18 May 1831 in Clark County, Indiana.19,17,20
