Obituary: Active life suited Cynthia Church

Cynthia Church, a retired restaurateur and real estate agent, was active wherever she lived.
So it was no surprise that when she moved to Elk Grove in the 1990s, she became a fixture at the Elk Grove Senior Center.
She led the writing club, belonged to the sewing group, played bunco, started the center's thrift store and worked at the center for a short period.
"She belonged to everything," said friend Flossy Sharrow.
Ms. Church, a prim but feisty woman who enjoyed shocking friends and family with off-color jokes, died June 18 from kidney failure and pneumonia, complications from her second battle with breast cancer. She was 79.
Ms. Church regularly volunteered with organizations, said daughter Deborah Barlas.
"She always liked to participate in whatever community she was in," she said. "We laughed that if we would write everything she did on her tombstone, we would have this huge tombstone."
Born in Iowa, Cynthia Eudora Church was a young child when her family moved to California. She was reared in North Boomsfield, which is now Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park, and later in Cantonville.
During World War II, Ms. Church work as a civilian in administrative support at Oaknoll Naval Hospital in Oakland.
During the same time, she met and married John Olekszulin. They divorced in 1969. She began using her maiden name after her divorce.
In the early 1970s, Ms. Church bought and operated a cafe in Amador County's Drytown for several years.
She saved enough money to buy a three-story building in Amador City. She operated a dinner house on the bottom floor and an antique and Christmas store upstairs.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time in the early 1980s, Ms. Church sold her businesses and opted for a slower lifestyle .
She found a new career in real estate. She sold property in the foothills. She finally retired in the late 1990s.
Therese Schultz, a former director of senior center, recalled that Ms. Church was one of the first people she met when she began running the center.
"She just carried herself so well," she said. "She was tall and had red hair. She had this contagious laugh. She was a real professional woman and this laugh would come out and every one would laugh."
With all her activities, Ms. Church still found time to put up her feet.
"She loved to read," Barlas said. "She read everything and anything. "
For the past month, Ms. Church was staying at the Elk Grove Care and Rehabilitation Center while she was ill.
