> Research" by George K. Schweitzer, 1997...

To further muddy the waters (?) I learned that surveying for the
Mason-Dixon Line dividing PA from MD, begun in 1763, was halted
because of Indian attacks. It was unsafe to proceed. The line
survey was never completed until many years later.

There were complaints to the royal gov't in England to settle
disputes over territory "ownership" in sw PA and the "panhandle"
of West Virginia. Virginia originally claimed, by her charter,
ALL the lands extending from present day Orange County to what is
now Minnesota! Here in Ohio, we even have a section called the
"Western Reserve" which was claimed at one time by Connecticut.

After the Rev War, by 1782, VA ceded her claims to the disputed
territory in PA, but new lands in the Ohio territory were set
aside for VA veterans to settle on, since VA could no longer
award lands in PA, and VA veterans found their land claims in PA
null and void.

This, along with other treatment of the SW PA pioneer settlers by
the new aristocratic government in Philadelphia, headed up by
"His Excellency, President George Washington," and his
aristocracy-favoring friends like Alexander Hamialton, really
rankled those settlers, and is part of the reason so many of them
left for Ohio, Kentucky, and later Indiana, Missouri, etc.
Pennsylvania (and eastern land speculators) sold that land for
ten to fourteen times what Virginia had been charging, and some
pioneers who'd settled on land with a Virginia warrant, found
themselves ousted or charged a huge fee (sales cost) to remain
where they were.

Feelings ran hard against the treatment they received. Some
settlers, my ancestors included, signed petitions as early as
1783 for creation of a new state, West Sylvania, to be carved
from the Monongahela country. In the 1790's such petitions and
activities were ruled treasonous by the Phildelphia courts. In
this light, it's no wonder that things boiled over into the
"Whiskey Rebellion" of 1794, which drove some of our ancestor out
of PA.17,13
He appeared in the census on 2 August 1790 in Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.18,8,9,10,11,14 He appeared in the census in 1791 in Tyrone Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.19 He was a grantee of on 20 July 1792 of in Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.20 He was taxed in 1793 in Tyrone Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.21 He was a grantee of on 30 January 1794 of in Dunbar Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Hugh Guering must have warranted and surveyed with Daniel Ressler Senior, since Daniel Junior would only have been 8 years old in 1794. He probably then resurveyed in 1831 with Daniel Ressler Junior - Daniel Sr was decd and Daniel Jr. was moving to Tuscarawas county, Ohio.20 He was taxed in 1798 in Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.22 He witnessed the baptism of Daniel Murphy on 19 May 1798 in Salt Lick Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.23 Daniel Resler, Sr., was taxed in 1799 in Saltlick Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. 1799 Saltlick taxpayer He witnessed the baptism of Elisabeth Murphy on 9 June 1799 in Salt Lick Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.23 He appeared in the census in 1800 in Salt Lick Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.24 He sold to on on 7 May 1804 of in Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. 153 acres on Brewers Run25 He witnessed the baptism of John Rasler Jr. on 16 June 1805 in Salt Lick Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.23 Daniel Resler, Sr., appeared in the census in 1810 in Salt Lick Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.26 He sold to on on 7 June 1815 of in Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.27 He witnessed the probate of the estate of Jacob Barnett in October 1829 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.28,13,29
