But, I was wondering about 2 things. There was a Caleb Huff whomarried a Latitia Downing. She was born  about 1773 in Maryland. There isan extensive Downing Genealogy on the web but never a mention of any childrenthat she and Caleb may have had. The Downing family was prominant in Pikecounty and later moved to Madison county, near London, Ohio.  Theage  and location fits very well.  On a land transaction in Pikecounty though, it says Caleb Huff's wife is Elizabeth. This could be a secondwife and perhaps the mother of his children.  Latitia's brother, FrancesWoodward Downing and his wife Elizabeth Foster named one of their sons, CalebHuff Downing.  I thought this very unusual.  I am sure you havespotted all this on the web but wondered if you had done any more research.

This table is a consolidation of several sources indicating who resided in the Turkeyfoot region and when (up to 1800).  * "ACRES 1772 TAX" is taken from "The History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties" and is the tax roles for Brother's Valley Township, Bedford County which, at the time, covered all of what is now Somerset County. Single residents without property, are shown as "Freeman".  * "PRE 1769" is from the same history and designates the settlers living there before William Penn opened the area for settlement.  * "TRADE" again is taken from the same history showing the occupations of a few people, other than farming.  * "ACRES WARRENTS 1773-1848" are extracted from the Lower Turkeyfoot Map showing the acreage in original land grants given in that township.  * "1790 & 1788 CENSUS" shows heads of households for both Turkeyfoot Townships.  * "1796 TAX LIST" shows 1796 taxpayers recorded in the history of Lower Turkeyfoot Township in the same history book.

Re: HUFF family in Harrison Co. Ohio   Sherilyn Johns  (View posts) Posted: 15 Aug 2005 3:20AM GMT Classification: Query Surnames: I didn't make it to Bedford Co. but our truck brokedown in Morgantown so I spent some time in their new genealogy library. Some ofour Huffs were there for a while. Found the daughter of Abraham Huff Sr.,Susanna who married William Cotton in 1808. There was also a court record forAbraham in 1811. He was being sued for slander. This is interesting because afew years later in Pike Co, he was also sued for slandering another man's wife.Almost all of the Huffs there had a daughter named Susanna but they are not ourSusanna. They all married someone else. I am more inclined to believe CalebHuff Sr. is the father. I still do not have concrete proof, Ohio census recordsdon't exist for 1800 and 1810 in Pike Co.

Abraham Huff Sr (our Caleb's probable brother)  whomarried  Prudence had a son Abraham who married Sarah Sargent.  They went to Hancock county where he was a judge.  He tried to plot a town called Capernaum but it wasn't a successful enterprise.  They later moved to Missouri.  I went to Crawford MO to check courthouse records but it had burned down and all the early records were lost.

    5. Sarah Huff (Susanna's sister) married Benjamin S Knight. His family is from Miami County Ohio. Benjamin died shortly after they were married. They had a daughter, Martha Irena Knight. Sarah later married Nelson Maddox and they had 6 children. One of the documents I sent is a court proceeding concerning some land that Martha inherited. It mentions Sarah and the second husband. They remained in Vermillion County, Illinois.

Donna, The Sarah Huff who married Benjamin Knight in Vermilion Co., IL was a sister of my ggg-grandmother Susannah Huff who married Charles Bennett December 25, 1817 in Pike Co., OH. Susannah's grandaughter Mary Lucinda Bennett married Henry Johns in Vermillion Co. Henry's mother was Nancy Knight who was born in the Dayton, OH area in 1817. Do you know of any relationship between the families of Benjamin and Nancy? Bob Reese
Donna, Benj. S. Knight married Sarah Huff Aug. 18, 1831 in Vermilion Co., IL. Sarah's brother-in-law Charles Bennett consented to the marriage. Source: "MARRIAGE LICENSE ABSTRACTS VERMILION COUNTY, ILLINOIS 1826 - 1852." Charles had married Susannah Huff in in 1817 in Pike Co., OH. Charles and Susannah were my ggg-grandparents. I thought I might get a line on Susannah's parents by investigating Sarah. Also hoped to find out something about my gg-grandmother Nancy Knight (b. OH in 1817) who's son Henry Johns (my g-grandfather) married Charles and Susannah's granddaughter Mary in Vermilion Co. Bob Reese
